How to request body cam & dash cam video in Colorado
Body-worn and dash camera recordings. Video usually needs review and redaction, which often adds agency fees. Colorado has a special 21-day release rule when a misconduct complaint has been filed.
Complex request: $300 flat, plus agency fees at cost.
The 21-day rule (SB20-217)
When a complaint of peace-officer misconduct has been made to the agency, Colorado law generally requires release of all unedited video and audio of the incident within 21 days after the agency receives a request (C.R.S. 24-31-902(2)(a)). Release can be delayed up to 45 days after the agency learns of the allegation if it would substantially interfere with an active investigation. Privacy-related blurring and next-of-kin notice rules also apply. Without a complaint, video requests are handled under the CCJRA's discretionary rules.
These are criminal justice records under the CCJRA, which requires a response within a reasonable time and gives custodians discretion over most records other than records of official action. See our CCJRA guide.
